Richard Sargent goes on trial for arm robbery

Richard was the only one on trial the morning of July 10, 1986. Cormier would go on trial in August for the November 1980 and March 1981 armed robberies and for aggravated assault on Charles Dolan.  Robert Smith (Pollard's good friend), the third man involved with Cormier and Pollard in the March 1981 robbery also testified against Cormier in August and got a reduced sentence. Percy Sargent plea bargained his part in the November 1980 armed robbery in December and his sentence ran concurrent with his rape sentence and drug trafficking charge. Percy was an old pro at working the system.
The state’s witnesses were Charles Dolan (the victim), Paul Pollard (the perpetrator) and Det. Shuman. Dolan’s testimony was that he couldn’t identify his attackers because they wore ski masks. Shuman’s testimony was that he knew nothing about the robberies until Pollard told him. Therefore, the state’s case rested solely on the testimony of Pollard. But Shuman reinforced Pollard’s testimony by testifying to the defendant’s creditable character.
