Paul Pollard deposition July 24, 1989

Attorney Michael Popkin first questioned Paul Pollard concerning his background.  Paul said he was born in Augusta, Maine, November 1, 1959, to Helen MacArmour (she was born in Honduras on December 22, 1929) and Edmund Cormier. He mostly grew up and went to school in Readfield, Maine, an area outside Augusta. He graduated from Maranacook High School in 1978, when he was 18 years old. He said he lived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1981.
Paul said that Lionel Cormier was his half-brother and he was ten years older than he was. Paul’s biological father, Edmond Cormier, adopted Lionel and gave him his name. During Paul’s years of growing up he only saw Lionel occasionally. He remembered meeting him on the street one time when he was in sixth or seventh grade. Then when he was a senior in high school he received a letter from Lionel while he was incarcerated at Maine State Prison. He asked him to come by and visit and he did. He visited maybe a half dozen times until he was released from prison. He picked him up at the prison and from that point on they were together a lot. His reason for developing a relationship with Cormier was because he was a long lost family member he felt affection for.
He went to Alaska as an alternative to going to college. (47) Owen Pollard thought he should go on to college, but he didn’t feel he was ready. Lionel was in Alaska part of the time Pollard was up there. Their mother lived in Alaska. Pollard agreed that Lionel led a fairly lawless life that he was involved in a lot of robberies and other things. But during the time he was first released from prison and the time they spent in Alaska, he felt that Cormier had changed. Then he began to notice the people he was associated with, people he had known from prison and a lot of drug use. He got Pollard involved in drugs. When Pollard said that Lionel got him involved in drugs, his attorney wanted to speak with him privately. When he returned he said he and Lionel’s drug use was only smoking marijuana.(50)
Pollard said Cormier got him involved in the November 1980 robbery of Charlie Dolan. (51) He said he met Percy Sargent when he and Lionel drove to Sargent’s apartment in Orono to buy a small amount of marijuana. The number of trips to see Percy got more and more frequent.  He met Bob Smith during high school.
